See how your links look when shared

When someone shares a link on social media or in chat apps, platforms build a card from the page's Open Graph and Twitter meta tags. A missing image or weak description can make an otherwise great article look unfinished in the feed.

The Open Graph Preview tool fetches a public URL, reads its meta tags, and shows approximate card mockups for common platforms. Use it to spot missing tags, weak copy, or image issues before you publish or promote a page.

What are Open Graph tags?

Open Graph tags are HTML meta elements in the page head that describe how a URL should appear when shared. The most important ones are og:title, og:description, og:image, and og:url. Twitter Card tags follow a similar pattern and control how links render on X.

These tags do not change the on-page experience for visitors. They only influence link previews on external platforms that read them when a URL is shared.

What this tool supports

  • Preview link cards for Facebook, X, LinkedIn, and Slack.
  • Fetch Open Graph and Twitter meta tags from any public URL.
  • See resolved title, description, image, and URL values.
  • Review all discovered tags in a sortable table with source labels.
  • Get warnings for missing images, titles, or canonical mismatches.
  • Copy discovered tags to the clipboard.
  • Paste HTML directly when a URL cannot be fetched.

Platform-specific notes

Facebook and LinkedIn rely heavily on Open Graph tags. X uses Twitter Card tags when present, but often falls back to Open Graph values. Slack and other chat apps typically pick up the same og:title, og:description, and og:image values.

Live platforms cache previews, so changes may not appear immediately after you update your tags. Use Facebook's Sharing Debugger or X's Card Validator when you need to confirm the cached version on each network.

Best practices

  • Use a unique og:url that matches the canonical page URL.
  • Keep og:title concise - most platforms truncate long titles.
  • Write og:description as a short summary, not a full paragraph from the page body.
  • Use absolute HTTPS URLs for og:image so platforms can fetch the image reliably.
  • Add both Open Graph and Twitter Card tags for consistent previews on X.
  • After publishing changes, use each platform's debugger to refresh cached previews.

Privacy

URL fetching goes through Contismo's server first so the tool can read most public pages. If that fails, a direct fetch is tried instead - useful for localhost or pages the server cannot reach. Pasted HTML is parsed locally.

  • URL previews are fetched server-side first, with a fallback if the server cannot reach the page.
  • Pasted HTML is parsed locally and is not uploaded.
  • No sign-up or account is required.

Frequently asked questions

Open Graph is a set of meta tags, usually prefixed with og:, that tell social platforms how to title, describe, and illustrate a link when it is shared. They live in the page head and do not change what visitors see on the page itself.

The preview looks for common Open Graph tags such as og:title, og:description, og:image, og:url, og:type, and og:site_name. It also reads Twitter Card tags like twitter:card, twitter:title, twitter:description, and twitter:image, then falls back to the page title, meta description, and favicon when needed.

Social platforms cache link previews and may apply their own rendering rules. This tool shows an approximation based on the tags present in the HTML you fetch or paste. Use each platform's official debugger or card validator when you need the live cached preview.

A safe starting point is 1200 by 630 pixels for large link cards on Facebook, LinkedIn, and X. Keep important content away from the edges, use JPG or PNG, and make sure the image URL is publicly accessible over HTTPS.

Open Graph tags are widely used across social platforms. Twitter Card tags are specific to X and control card layout through values like summary and summary_large_image. Many sites define both so each platform has explicit metadata.

When you preview by URL, the page HTML is fetched through our server first. If that fails, a direct fetch is tried instead. If you paste HTML, parsing happens locally and nothing is uploaded.
